The Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates (MRGWA) is an all-volunteer 501c3 water resources policy advocacy non-profit. We were incorporated in 1998 as the MRG Water Assembly to lead the preparation of the 2004 Middle Rio Grande Regional Water Plan.  Our mission today remains the same: to balance water use with the renewable supply. We bring value by cooperating with others to create transformative change to improve New Mexico’s and the Middle Rio Grande’s water resources governance. Our name change in 2017 from Assembly to Advocates shows that water advocacy is our primary purpose. We are the only community organization focused on New Mexico’s water quantity management.

The MRGWA seeks a communications assistant / contractor to support public communications and outreach to help meet the MRGWA’s strategic goals.

The primary responsibility of this part-time contract position is to prepare and deliver MRGWA’s external communications, including tailoring content for various platforms and audiences. These types of communications include a semi-monthly newsletter, social media (currently Facebook and Twitter), our website (, and news releases. The position will also assist with coordinating the Water Advocates webinars.

The purpose of the position is to increase interactions with the public, including increasing the number of social media followers, newsletter subscribers, and the use of links to our website.

Good writing skills and tech skills are required.

WordPress familiarity and acquaintance with New Mexico water & aridification issues is helpful.

Specific duties include:

  • Social Media – Establish, update, and monitor the MRGWA presence on Twitter and Facebook; manage platforms; and increase followers
  • Newsletters – Draft and send e-newsletters every two weeks, maintain and grow email subscribers, and work with content providers
  • Webinars – Assist with producing webinars
  • Website – Update website and maintain email lists

We are seeking a candidate who can work effectively with minimal supervision for 8 to 16 hours per week. The pay range is $18 to $25 per hour, commensurate with skills and experience. The communications contractor will be paid bi-weekly at the agreed hourly rate upon submission of an annotated timesheet.
